The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) announced on Thursday, December 1 that world record holder Eliud Kipchoge will race the 127th Boston Marathon on April 17, 2023.

“I am happy to announce in April I will compete in the Boston Marathon, a new chapter in my Abbott World Marathon Majors journey,” said Kipchoge. “Good luck to all the runners running Boston in 2023.”

World champion Gotytom Gebreslase headlines the women’s field. Both Kipchoge and Gebreslase are making their Boston Marathon debuts.

Six Boston Marathon champions return for a chance to win another title. On the men’s side, defending champion Evans Chebet, 2021 champion Benson Kipruto, and two-time winner Lelisa Desisa will be on the starting line. Among the returning women’s champions are Des Linden (2018), Edna Kiplagat (2017) and Atsede Baysa (2016).

“The B.A.A. is bringing the world’s best to Boston to compete on the renowned 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Boston,” said Mary Kate Shea, B.A.A. Director of Professional Athletes & Technical Support. “World record holder and Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge, World Champion Gotytom Gebreslase and six Boston Marathon winners will challenge themselves, each other and a deep field of accomplished athletes on our sport’s famed stage.”

Kipchoge has previously stated his intent to compete in all six World Marathon Majors. After the 2023 Boston Marathon, the last remaining World Major on his list is the New York City Marathon.
