With a strong push in the 25th mile, Benson Kipruto of Kenya took solo possession of the lead and held it to win the 2022 Chicago Marathon in 2:04:24. The time is a personal best for Kipruto, the 2021 Boston Marathon champ, and the fastest winning time in Chicago since 2014.

Defending champion Seifu Tura was second in 2:04:49, and John Korir of Kenya, a two-time winner of the Los Angeles Marathon and younger brother of former Boston winner Wesley Korir, was third in a personal best of 2:05:01.

Two-time NCAA cross-country champion Conner Mantz was the top American, placing seventh in 2:08:16 in his marathon debut. Zachery Panning, 11th in 2:09:28, and Matt McDonald, 12th in 2:09:49, were the second and third U.S. finishers.

Kipruto used similar tactics to win the 2021 Boston Marathon, when he ran a stunning 14:05 5K between 35K and 40K. Today, he waited until later in the race, but once he pushed, his two remaining rivals had no answer.

Kipruto had good reason to be confident in his fitness. One of his training partners, Amos Kipruto, won the London Marathon last week.
